Including My Story: How Tony Melvin avoided bankruptcy and a bad credit rating and came back from $300,000 debt

“Don’t give in to debt and don’t give in to bankruptcy,” says Australia’s leading money author, in a brutally honest new book about debt.

Tony Melvin, author of
How to Legally Reduce Your Tax, How to Control Your Super Now and Wealth for Life, has now written the most important money book of 2009. It teaches Australians what good debt is and how to get out of killer debt forever. And it reveals how he avoided bankruptcy and repaid $300,000 in debt after a failed business sale in 2001.

From Red to Black explains debt in a way we’ve not seen before:

  • What is good debt (investment)

  • What is killer debt (spending with no return)

  • What is solvency (assets vs debts)

  • What is viability (income vs expenditure)

  • How to budget to pay off your killer debts

  • How to negotiate with creditors (even lawyers)

  • How to move forward and stay out of killer debt forever

  • Learn how Tony coped with massive credit card debt

“Australians can make money, but controlling it takes another set of skills. There is a huge shortage of those skills in the average population,” says Tony Melvin. “If you are in debt now, I can teach you how to get out of it. This system can alleviate enormous amounts of stress.”

In
From Red to Black, Melvin says Australians need to come clean with themselves about killer debt; and then they can start getting rid of it.

Tony Melvin has become one of Australia’s most successful money authors of all time, selling 100,000 books, including
How to Legally Reduce Your Tax (2006) and Wealth for Life (2008). Both have been in the top ten list of business books since release and both are Money Magazine Best of the Best Books. Until recently, Melvin was Managing Director of national accounting firm, Chan & Naylor, named by BRW as Australia’s Fastest Growing Accounting Firm, 2007 and 2008.

But Melvin has seen harder days, admitting in
From Red to Black he worked two jobs, including cleaning grease traps in restaurants, to pay off killer debts between 2001 and 2003. In 2001, after selling all his assets, even his beloved surfboard, Melvin was desperate and broke. In From Red to Black he tells the extraordinary story of how he repaid all debts and even kept creditors happy.

“90% of creditors just need to know they will get their money eventually. I wanted to show other people how to manage the repayments plus how to communicate with creditors and lawyers. I still deal with some of the companies I owed money to back then,” Melvin says.

Tony Melvin is an experienced and popular media commentator, appearing frequently on radio, TV and in press. He is known for a bold down-to-earth approach to money and investing.
From Red to Black is his fourth book and will be published in USA in 2009.

Tony Melvin is touring Brisbane (Mon 23 Feb); Sydney (Tue 24 Feb);
Melb (Wed 25 Feb) and Perth (Tue 3 March) and is available for interview.
